May book choice

I have 3 possibilities for May and want your opinion.

Book one: To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic I am thinking we could read a book called The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan. Her story follows a lifeboat with 39 survivors from a fictional ocean liner that sinks. It is set in 1914 and told in diary form. It is told from the perspective of a 22 year old American woman who is now on trial for murder due to her actions on the lifeboat. I'm sure it is full of queasy moral dilemnas! - sounds fun :)
I have personally not read this book.

Book two: Girl meets God by Lauren Winner
This is a non fiction book about a woman's journey to faith. Lauren is an orthodox Jew who converts to Christianity. I found this book interesting because of Lauren's Jewish experience and her perspective that she brings to Christianity. The book is full of intellectual and spiritual struggle and gives buckets of information on Orthodox Judaism.

Book three: Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
I found this book to be an excellent read - very engrossing. It is set in a mission hospital in Addis Ababa and invokes emotions about birth, love, death, war and loyalty.
This book is probably my first pick.

  1. I am most drawn to "Cutting for Stone," but "Girl meets God" sound good too. I read a review on "The Lifeboat" in TIME and it seemed like more of a horror story than a historical or mystery genre, and since you are asking for opinions, horror isn't my favorite.

  2. My first pick would be Girl Meets God, and second Cutting for Stone, but either of those sound good to me. I second Clara on The Lifeboat. I read a bit about it in Smithsonian, and I think it will be quite sensationalized and more graphic than I like...

  3. I always prefer a book recommendation that you have already read. I think if Cutting For Stone is your first choice, I trust your instincts.
