Just a few Book Club related thoughts this fine Spring morning:
I heard David Sheff on NPR yesterday talking about his new book, Clean, which sounds like a well researched look at addiction in the US.

When we read Beautiful Boy, Sheff's 'voice' was not the compelling part of the story for me. In the radio interview, I really enjoyed listening to him and found the research and information he presented fascinating. When I have more than 2 minutes to talk to Kevin-maybe when we are empty nesters- I plan to discuss it with him and compare it to what he works with in the Church's ARP program here in the valley.
And...I am about 1/3 of the way through Clara's selection for this month, In My Mother's House- I think we will have PLENTY to discuss about family dynamics, history, oppression of the working class, etc, etc. I found an interesting Utah/ musical reference about a man named Joe Hill mentioned in the book:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Hill
Highlights include:
Hill was memorialized in a tribute poem written about him c. 1930 by Alfred Hayes titled "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night", sometimes referred to simply as "Joe Hill".[25
Chumbawamba's song about Joe Hill, "By and By", appears on the 2005 album A Singsong and a Scrap. It incorporates the first stanza of Alfred Hayes' poem.
Wallace Stegner published a fictional biography called Joe Hill in 1950
Lastly, ripped from the headlines:

Looking forward, as always to be with you all in a few weeks!
I listened to the same Sheff interview on npr and thought of you all. He is an interesting and articulate man.
